Helping educators see beyond the obvious

Practical professional learning for educators supporting gifted, high potential and twice-exceptional learners

Gifted and twice-exceptional students don't always look the way we expect.

A student may be achieving highly — or barely engaging.

They may be curious, questioning and deeply knowledgeable, while also struggling with anxiety, perfectionism, friendships or emotional regulation.

Sometimes their strengths are obvious.

Sometimes their challenges are.

And sometimes neither tells the whole story.

I work with educators to build a deeper understanding of these learners and develop practical ways to recognise, engage and support them in the classroom.

From "What am I missing?" to "I know what I can do."

Supporting a gifted or twice-exceptional learner can leave educators with questions:

Is this student actually being challenged?

Why are they capable of so much more than they're producing?

Are they disengaged, or is something else going on?

Why does their behaviour change so dramatically?

How can I support their strengths without overlooking their needs?

Professional learning with The Bright Line is designed to help educators move from uncertainty to greater understanding, confidence and practical action.

You'll gain a clearer lens through which to view your learners and strategies you can take straight back into your classroom.

Look beyond the obvious

Gifted learners are not always high achievers.

Twice-exceptional learners can be particularly easy to misunderstand because their strengths and challenges can mask one another.

A student who appears capable may still need significant support.

A student who is struggling may have considerable strengths that aren't being recognised.

The first step is learning to look beyond what we see on the surface.

My professional learning helps educators consider:

  • what giftedness can look like in different learners

  • recognising potential beyond academic achievement

  • identifying possible twice-exceptionality

  • understanding asynchronous development

  • recognising perfectionism, anxiety and emotional intensity

  • understanding disengagement and underachievement

  • considering the impact of learning environment and expectations

  • creating opportunities for appropriate challenge and engagement

  • supporting belonging, self-understanding and wellbeing

  • responding to individual strengths and needs

The focus is not on adding another layer of complexity to teachers' work.

It's about helping educators see what may already be in front of them — and knowing what to do with that understanding.

Professional learning grounded in real classrooms

My approach has been shaped by more than 15 years working in gifted education across New Zealand.

I founded and led The Head Office, a specialist programme for gifted children in Taranaki, for 11 years. During that time, I worked alongside children, families and educators across primary and intermediate settings and developed strong relationships with schools throughout the region.

I've also provided professional learning for educators from early childhood through to secondary school, helping teachers and school leaders strengthen their understanding of gifted learners and consider practical classroom approaches.

I am also on the committee of the New Zealand Association for Gifted Children, and run frequent workshops for Mensa NZ and Radiant Minds.

More recently, I've brought this experience into my work with schools in Singapore.

Katja Eager / The Bright Line

My recent collaborations have included professional learning with educators at Winstedt School, exploring twice-exceptional learners. I've also been working with schools exploring how to build greater capacity to recognise and support gifted and 2e learners within their existing learning environments.

Different contexts. Different schools. The same starting point: understand the learner in front of you.

What professional learning can look like

There is no single workshop that will meet every school's needs.

Sessions can be tailored to your learners, your staff and the questions you're currently exploring.

Understanding giftedness

What giftedness can look like across different ages, gender and contexts, and how to recognise potential beyond achievement.

Looking beyond behaviour

Considering what behaviour may be communicating and how educators can respond to the needs underneath it.

Recognising twice-exceptionality

Understanding learners whose giftedness exists alongside learning differences or difficulties, and tips how to identify them in your classroom.

Practical classroom strategies

Moving from under-standing to action with strategies for challenge, differentiation, engage-ment, communication and wellbeing.

Supporting engagement

Exploring why highly capable learners can disengage, underachieve or appear resistant to learning, and what educators can do to help.

Building educator confidence

Developing a shared language and under-standing so teachers feel more confident to recognise and respond to gifted and 2e learners.

Learning that leads to action

My professional learning is designed to be:

Practical: Ideas and strategies that can be applied in real classrooms.

Interactive: Opportunities to reflect, discuss and consider real examples.

Strengths-based: Looking beyond difficulties to recognise capability, interests and potential.

Grounded in experience: Drawing on real learners, families, classrooms and schools.

Tailored: Shaped around your staff, your learners and the questions that matter in your context.

The aim isn't for educators to leave with a bigger list of things they should be doing.

It's to leave with a different lens — and a few practical things they can do differently tomorrow.

A collaborative approach

I don't come into schools with a list of answers and a prescription for what teachers should do. I work alongside educators.

You know your students, your classrooms and your school context.

I bring specialist knowledge and experience in gifted and twice-exceptional education.

Together, we can explore what you're seeing, consider what might be happening underneath it, and identify practical ways forward.
